What happened?
The tanker ‘Wisby Atlantic’ ran aground on a sandbank on the Amazon river about 40 miles downstream from Macapá, while proceeding upstream to Manaus port with 50,000 tons of fuel on board.
Sailed on wrong side
The tanker got stuck on a water depth of 14 meters, having sailed on the wrong side of the channel, and threatened by a hull rupture due to the strong tide.
The was refloated about six hours later with the ship help of a tug of the Macapá-based Docas company and is currently moored at the Santana anchorage, Macapá, for further inspections.
