Tanker on Fire in South Korean Waters

On May 8, an oil tanker caught fire on the waters off the Southern coast.

What happened?

A Panama flagged oil tanker enroute from Hong Kong to South Korea when it caught fire on the waters off the southern coast.

The 7,700-ton vessel was carrying 21 crewmen caught fire while passing through the waters about 33 kilometers south of an island of Tongyeong, about 340 km south of Seoul. The tanker was loaded with 4,700 tons of highly flammable liquid Mix-Xylene when it caught fire.

Fire originated from an empty tank

The fire originated in one of the empty tanks, and the crew members were efficiently put out the fire within 20 minutes using extinguishers.

None injured

Fortunately no one was injured in the fire incident and no pollution was reported. The tanker is currently on its way to the Busan Port in South Korea.
