Tankers Involved in Collision Carrying Cargo

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) has confirmed two coastal shipping vessels that collided in Loon Bay were carrying cargo.

The Travestern was loaded with 9,824 cubic metres of gas and oil, and 9,384 cubic metres of jet fuel, TSB media relations specialist Alexandre Fournier told the Pilot. The Halverstern was carrying 8,860 cubic metres of gasoline.

The ships collided June 18 while attempting to tie up alongside for a fuel transfer. No injuries or pollution were reported, but minor damage to crew quarters and an empty ballast tank were reported, according to the TSB.

The Travestern also sustained a six-inch crack above the ship’s water line, with minor damage to the bow of the Halverstern also reported, said Fournier.

The TSB said despite the damage, the seaworthiness of both vessels was unaffected.

A TSB investigation into the collision has since closed been closed. The Pilot has requested more information regarding the incident, the TSB’s response, and the investigation’s conclusions, but has not yet received a response. The Pilot will provide updates as more information becomes available.
