The Digital Double-Edged Sword: Maritime Technology’s Impact on Seafarer Mental Health

8

The accelerating digital transformation in the maritime industry, while offering new ways to access healthcare, is also introducing new psychological stressors for seafarers. VIKAND, a leader in maritime healthcare, highlights that while technology provides benefits like remote counseling and telehealth, its long-term impact on mental well-being is a growing concern. The digital shift presents a “double-edged sword,” streamlining support while simultaneously creating new forms of stress.

New Digital Stressors and Generational Divides

According to Martin Hedman, VIKAND’s Director of Mental Wellness Practices, seafarers are experiencing psychological challenges tied to digital life, such as doomscrolling fatigue, social isolation from excessive phone use, and anxiety from navigating complex digital processes. These issues are compounded by generational differences; older crew members may find it more difficult to use new digital interfaces for training and health access, leading to increased stress and a sense of isolation.

Stigma, Privacy, and Emerging Concerns

A major barrier to the use of digital mental health services is the persistent stigma and privacy concerns. Many seafarers, particularly senior staff, worry that using these services could lead to their data being used against them, potentially resulting in job loss. While direct links between technology and mental health cases are not yet formally recorded, VIKAND observes that digitalization subtly adds to workload pressures and fatigue. In the future, a growing concern will be Fear of Missing Out (FOMO), as constant connectivity exposes seafarers to onshore life, potentially heightening feelings of separation from family and friends.

A Call for Mindful Implementation

As technology streamlines tasks through automation, it can also increase the administrative burden on crews by shifting responsibilities. Martin Hedman emphasizes the need for a balanced and mindful approach to implementing these tools. The goal should be to design technology that supports seafarers without overwhelming them, preventing digital dependency and ensuring that the benefits of connectivity don’t come at the expense of their mental well-being.
