  • EIFFEL Project Integrates Satellite and Sensor Data for Smarter Pollution Forecasting.

Prodevelop announces the end of EIFFEL, a research and development project created to develop more state-of-the-art AI to enrich climate change adaptation and mitigation through advanced GEOSS data integration. The project started up in the year 2021 under Horizon 2020, aiming at developing a strong tool to be operational in environmental sustainability at the ports of the Balearic Islands, reports Prodevelop.

Collaboration for Environmental Impact Reduction

With the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) and the Balearic Island Port Authority (BPA), Prodevelop has developed an AI application aimed at monitoring and predicting air pollution generated from port activities. More than 50,000 ship calls and millions of passengers go through the Balearic ports every year. There is a recognition that carbon footprint should be reduced by minimizing the environmental impact on nearby urban areas.

AI and Real-time Monitoring

The EIFFEL application, coproduced with the BPA, merges enhanced GEOSS (Copernicus) data combined with real-time BPA air quality sensor network data and forecasts from local weather. It can track NO2, SO2, PM10, and PM2.5 pollutants and provide advanced prediction for up to 72 hours in advance. With such data, the ports can pertinently take decisions to reduce emissions and control the resultant pollution.

Satellite and Sensor Data Integration

Its major success would be the deployment of this AI-based application, integrating satellite data with in-situ sensor readings towards pollution forecasting. This would enhance considerably the BPAs ability to mitigate environmental impacts, helping to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and promoting further transparency and interaction with the public.

Importance of Collaboration with Stakeholders

The EIFFEL project is an example of how cooperation among the parties interested, such as Prodevelop, BPA, shipping companies, and UPV, can be a very powerful tool in designing a decision-support tool focusing on air quality of the prime climate change priorities for European ports.

Future Implications and Policy Influence

The EIFFEL project has now come to an end, but it is expected that the developed tools and methodologies will continue to deliver insights that promise to achieve this saving of port emissions and contribute toward global climate mitigation efforts. Innovations and knowledge from the EIFFEL project are to feed into the future framework of environmental policy, which will lead the way further for improvements in sustainable port management.
