Crowley’s pioneering eWolf, the first all-electric tugboat in the United States, has commenced sea trials along the U.S. Gulf Coast. Constructed by Master Boat Builders in Coden, Ala., this 82-foot ship assist tug is scheduled to operate at the Port of San Diego by 2024. Recent video footage shared by Crowley on social media showcases its sea trials, reports Marinelink.

Innovative Design and Key Features

The eWolf is meticulously engineered to run solely on electric power, ensuring zero carbon emissions. It boasts an expected 70-ton bollard pull strength, equipped with cutting-edge technology.

ABB has integrated its electrical package, while the vessel houses a 6.2 MWh Orca battery energy storage system from Corvus Energy. Additionally, it features two electrically driven Schottel RudderPropellers type SRP 430 LE (2,050 kW each) with propeller diameters of 2.5 meters. For emergency purposes and extended transits at lower speeds, the tug also carries two small generators.

Charging Infrastructure and Compliance

Charging the tug’s battery system is facilitated through a purpose-built shoreside station housing two Corvus Orca BOBs (battery on board), the containerized version of the Corvus Orca ESS. This vessel complies with ABS class standards and adheres to U.S. Coast Guard Subchapter M regulations, ensuring safety and regulatory compliance.

Collaborative Efforts and Environmental Impact

The development of this Jones Act-compliant all-electric tugboat is the culmination of a collaborative partnership involving Crowley, the San Diego County Air Pollution Control District, the California Air Resources Board, the Port of San Diego, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the U.S. Maritime Administration.

These entities offered financial support and resources to bring this groundbreaking project to fruition.

The eWolf represents a larger trend within the maritime industry, where vessel owners are increasingly exploring hybrid and fully electric options to curb emissions.

Toward Sustainable Practices

Crowley’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions across all scopes by 2050 aligns with the introduction of the eWolf. The company estimates a substantial reduction of approximately 4.2 million metric tons of greenhouse gases annually through these sustainable initiatives.
