The Man Supervising Maersk Tankers’ LR2s Being Built in China

Peter Bertelsen knows MR tankers like the back of his hand. So far, he has supervised the building of 13 of 19 MR newbuildings Maersk Tankers has on order in China. Indeed, since joining Maersk 13 years ago in the ship design division, he has supervised the construction of over 70 Maersk vessels in China. This includes the famous Triple-E container ships.

Mr.Bertelsen said, “After having taken delivery of 13 out of the 19 MR newbuildings, it is time for me to hand over the responsibility and move on to Dalian shipyard to oversee the building of the LR2s”.

LR2 orders

These are the LR2s ordered in early 2018. Each of the 110,000-dwt LR2s will take approximately 16 months to construct, with each vessel consisting of around 300 blocks, containing 161 km of cables and 16,700 m2 of paint on the hull.

The six LR2s will join the 11 LR2 product tankers already in the Maersk Tanker fleet, which includes the Norsepower Rotor Sail-equipped Maersk Pelican.

Requirements of clients

Maersk Tankers has worked closely with clients to specify the LR2s to their requirements and is installing separate cargo pumps for each tank instead of one set of central pumps. This enables the company to transport six different cargo grades, giving customers more flexibility.

Mr Bertelsen said, “In addition to that, we do a lot to optimise energy consumption. With every new generation of vessels, we have a chance to make them more efficient. We build the LR2s based on our predictions for the future. If you build for the past, you’re not going to get very far. The efficiency of the LR2s will enable Maersk Tankers to meet its customers’ demands not only today, but also in the future”.

He further explained that this is done through, for example, frequency-controlled seawater pumps and installing low-energy consuming equipment.
