The long-term collaboration and shared journey to create a clean petroleum and bioproducts supply chain with minimal emissions were underway in 2013, as reported by Tern Tank.
New technologies
Six Terntank tankers are currently in use by North European Oil Trading (NEOT). Companies have jointly tested the first liquefied biogas (LBG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered tankers over the previous 10 years. In 2018, NEOT was the first business in Finland to use fossil-free LBG for shipping. With the introduction of the hybrid battery system and on-shore power connection as the first tankers in the world in 2020, the development of new cutting-edge technologies proceeded. In ports located in metropolitan areas, our Hybrid Solution® provides a zero-emission approach and minimises hazardous emissions. Just-In-Time arrival of vessels has been continuously developed by Terntank and NEOT to optimise their speed during the voyage and guarantee berth availability while arriving at a port.
Environmental friendly shipping
New 15,000 dwt hybrid tankers with 14 cargo tank divisions that are powered by wind and methanol will be ordered by Terntank in November 2022. For the time charter, NEOT will possess the first of these new structures. March 2025 will see the delivery of the ship. The brand-new time-chartered vessel will mark the most significant strides towards more environmentally friendly shipping. The ship will be equipped with folding sails for wind-assisted propulsion in addition to the Hybrid Solution® and a dual-fuel engine that will allow the use of green methanol in the future. Green methanol is a low-carbon fuel produced from carbon dioxide that has been captured and either biomass or renewable electricity.
Together with Terntank and NEOT, the Finnish energy service provider Wega has supported their ten-year partnership and developed future shipping. The companies’ charter agreement was facilitated by Wega.
