The Port Of Rotterdam’s Secure Chain Initiative

121

The Port of Rotterdam has announced a groundbreaking initiative to enhance security and reliability in container cargo handling. This involves the implementation of the Secure Chain, a collaborative effort between major shipping lines and authorities.

Key Components of the Secure Chain

  1. Secure Container Release: Import containers from North America will no longer require PIN codes for release, ensuring heightened security and reliability.
  2. Expansion Plans: Initially launched for cargo from Latin America, the Secure Chain will progressively extend to other sailing areas in the latter half of 2024.
  3. Participating Shipping Lines: Notable shipping lines such as CMA CGM, Maersk, and MSC are actively involved in the Secure Chain initiative, indicating broad industry support.

Operational Mechanism

The Secure Chain operates within a closed logistics chain, exclusively involving authorized parties. Through digital authorization within the Port Community System of Portable, secure container collection at terminals is facilitated, eliminating the susceptibility of PIN code abuse.
