Artificial intelligence will be pivotal in helping seafarers meet the challenges of decarbonization and changing regulatory practices.

Upskilling for the Future

Vessel operators are well versed in complying with multiple changing regulations, but with the increasing focus on environmental sustainability, ambitious targets for carbon neutrality, as well as the broader spotlight on ESG performance, there is a growing need to ensure crews are ready for these seismic changes.

The ‘4th propulsion’ revolution is upon us and it will have a huge impact on the way ships are used and designed, as the industry works towards a 50% cut in total GHG emissions by 2050.

“There is a lot we can learn from the carrying of these fuels as cargoes and the great work already undertaken on LNG as a fuel,” said OTG chief creative officer, Raal Harris. “Whilst each new fuel has its own properties, they all require a higher level of controls and safety culture. Standards like SIGGTO, the IGF Code and those prepared by the Society of Gas as a Marine Fuel (SGMF) are a great starting place.”

Tanker operators will undoubtedly find it easier to implement new fuels than other shipping sectors, as many are familiar with handling LNG as cargo and are also used to working with SIRE, as required by OCIMF.

“The fact that we have already developed material to all these standards should help give us a head start to ensure training is in place for our seafarers in good time,” noted Mr. Harris.

“At the moment, we have a global workforce that are all experienced with HFO. We already know that the future will involve a mix of fuels; consequently, levels of experience will differ wildly, meaning just-in-time learning and certification will be essential,” said Mr. Harris.

AI training

SQLearn, a leading maritime training provider, is transforming computer-based training (CBT) for seafarers with its AI-powered digital assistant. This advanced AI tutor not only addresses learners’ inquiries but also fosters engagement, understanding, and personalized learning paths.

By monitoring progress and offering constructive feedback, the AI assistant ensures an efficient and customized learning experience. This groundbreaking technology sets a new standard for maritime training, redefining how seafarers interact with CBT courses and creating a more dynamic and effective learning journey for the industry’s workforce.
