The Week In Alt Fuels: Proposals Pile Up For MEPC 82

Proposals submitted to the IMO include recommendations for mid-term measures and requests for a review of the CII. These will be discussed at the upcoming MEPC 82 meeting next month, reports engine.online.

Several shipping trade bodies and regional regulators have submitted their recommendations to the IMO, with less than 50 days remaining before the 82nd Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 82) meeting. Many of these proposals include suggestions for shaping the IMO’s mid-term measures.

Aims

The IMO aims to implement its mid-term measures next year to complement its 2023 GHG strategy and help the international shipping industry meet interim greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets. The ultimate goal is to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) has proposed that ships pay an annual ‘flat-rate’ emission fee for every metric tonne of carbon dioxide-equivalent emitted, for a period of at least five years starting in 2025.

The IMO will discuss and potentially refine these proposals during MEPC 82, but implementing them will require consensus among member nations.

Meanwhile, the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII), which came into effect just last year, is already drawing criticism for the way it is calculated. The CII measures how efficiently a ship transports goods or passengers.

US-based renewable fuel producer HIF Global has announced plans to establish several e-methanol plants in the US, Australia, Chile and Uruguay. A portion or all of the output from these facilities is expected to be exported to Japan, where it will be used as bunker fuel in the shipping sector or in other industries, the company said.
