Thecla Bodewes Shipyards, headquartered in Kampen, Netherlands, has secured an order from Navigare Shipping for four GADUS design vessels. This partnership marks the beginning of a fleet renewal for Navigare Shipping, a family-owned company based in the Faroe Islands, and represents a step towards greater sustainability in its operations.
GADUS 5600 Design: Key Features
- Diesel-Electric Propulsion: Enhances fuel efficiency and reduces emissions.
- Alternative Fuel-Ready: The vessels are equipped to transition to alternative fuels, batteries, and even mechanical sails, supporting a future shift toward zero-emission operations.
- Advanced Automation: Incorporates state-of-the-art automation and control systems for streamlined operations.
- Increased Cargo Capacity: Although the vessels have the same dimensions as the largest ships in Navigare’s current fleet, the GADUS 5600 design achieves higher cargo capacity while significantly lowering fuel consumption.
Sustainability Initiatives
These ships will feature electrical cargo gear that can operate on shore power, further minimizing emissions during port stays. The GADUS series has been designed with Navigare Shipping’s experience and clients’ needs in mind, ensuring that each vessel aligns with future operational requirements.
Inspiration Behind “GADUS”
The series name, GADUS, is derived from the Atlantic Cod, a species well-adapted to the cold waters of the North Sea and Atlantic Ocean. Known for its low energy consumption and ability to cover vast distances sustainably, the cod serves as an inspiration for the GADUS 5600’s design philosophy, emphasizing efficiency and endurance in challenging environments.
Thecla Bodewes, CEO of the shipyard, expressed pride in this new partnership, especially given its focus on sustainable shipping solutions. The four vessels represent a significant collaboration aimed at transforming Navigare Shipping’s fleet and promoting environmental stewardship in the shipping industry.
