Celebrity Edge and Captain Kate make an interesting news in Forbes.  Some of the special features about Kate, her experience as a captain, inspiration to become a captain, and approach to passengers are briefly described.

Celebrity Edge is a mega newest ship in the realm of Celebrity.  Whereas, that isn’t the half of it. The most significant other feature is Captain Kate.

We think it’s unusual that a woman is leading this floating skyscraper the length of three football fields? Well, she thinks it’s also fun.

Captain Kate’s childhood dream

Holding a framed certificate in hand she said, “I got this when I was 12 years old and took a cruise out of Orlando”.  It’s a make-believe cruise-director paper. “I want to be a cruise director,’ I told my dad.”

The journey begins

This didn’t happen to her right away. It all started slowly and she happen to make it this to the this big in the world of maritime.

  • She graduated from California State University Maritime Academy in 1999.
  • She was one of eight women in a class of 108.
  • In fact, she even was the only female player on the water polo team. (That is a remarkably rough sport.)

All her caliber didn’t garner the attention of her potential employers.  Her interest and love for the sea-going job was unheard, until she landed in Disney as a bartender. Later she happen to convince them that she has some knowledge about ship as well. Finally, they gave her an opportunity and she began from there.

Her experience and humorous nature

In general, she maintains a sense of humor about her unique position.  And admits that in her initial days of her career she thought that a ship’s captain should have a dour demeanor.

“I didn’t smile my first two weeks. Then I realized I should be myself.”

Captain Kate enjoys her work and also maintains high standards in the work place. She shares her experience on working in a mega ship in a funny note especially on asking for directions. She tells that, it’s not easy finding even a rest room on anything so large—or even looked a tad confused, I would be led by the hand. Even at the world’s largest breakfast buffet, I’d be walked over to the eggs station if I couldn’t find it.

Working for passengers

“The best part of the job is 4,203 opportunities to make somebody happy,” she says of the size of the number of passengers and crew.  The first thing we do is meet the crew when they board ship.”

She ensures that 4,203 other people are doing their job or enjoying the cruise and this takes up half her time.  She works three months on and three months off. And when she’s working, she tries to take a nap.

Signing off with a hug

When someone meets Captain Kate one’s impression is she’s been waiting all day just to see you. And when one  is ready to leave, don’t be surprised if she gives a hug. After all, it is the captain’s prerogative.
