  • Stolt Tankers has reduced its fuel consumption by 6% compared to 2020.
  • The related reduction in CO2 emissions is equivalent to removing 18,000 cars from the roads for a year.
  • Speed and trim were optimised according to weather conditions and enhanced maintenance programmes – including additional hull and propeller cleaning – also reduced fuel use.

Stolt Tankers has reduced its fuel consumption by 6% compared to 2020 as reported by Stolt-Nielsen.

Reduction in emission

CO2 emissions are reduced by the same amount as eliminating 18,000 cars from the road for a year.

Following the signing of the Glasgow Climate Pact by nearly 200 countries last week, it is apparent that environmental issues are becoming increasingly pressing for governments and corporations alike.

Stolt Tankers announced its intention in 2020 to lower its own carbon intensity by 50% by 2030 (compared to 2008) and to become a fully carbon-neutral business by 2050, in order to support the shipping industry’s drive to reduce its carbon footprint.

Shipowners will be taxed for each metric tonne of in-scope CO2 emitted starting in 2023.

This poses a significant challenge for the shipping sector, which is already dealing with record-high expenses, razor-thin profits, and increasingly uncertain supply chains.

Decarbonization projects

“Stolt Tankers has a long history of doing the right thing when it comes to protecting people and the earth,” stated Lucas Vos, President Stolt Tankers, in response to the need to cut CO2 emissions and the new carbon price.

We believe that firms should be required to cut their carbon emissions.

We’re working hard to reach our new carbon-reduction targets, and I’m glad to report that we’re on track to accomplish them.

Improved maintenance programmes — including increased hull and propeller cleaning – also helped to cut fuel use.

The reduction in CO2 emissions is precisely proportional to the bunker savings.

The Mærsk Mc-Kinney Miller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping is sending workers there to work on decarbonization projects.
