Thordon Enables Wireless Monitoring of Seawater-Lubricated Bearings

1382

Thordon Bearings, in collaboration with UK-based CSignum, has introduced a cutting-edge wireless propeller shaft bearing wear measurement system, known as the Bearing Condition Monitoring – Wireless (BCM-W). Utilizing patented electromagnetic field signaling (EMFS) technology, the system allows for real-time data transmission from underwater sensors without the need for traditional, invasive wiring, significantly improving hull and shaft condition monitoring and reducing maintenance downtime.

Cutting-Edge Wireless Monitoring for Propeller Shafts

The BCM-W system represents a leap forward in condition monitoring, using advanced EMFS technology to wirelessly communicate bearing wear data from underwater sensors. This innovation bypasses the limitations of traditional wired setups, allowing for seamless, real-time data acquisition.

Benefits of a Cable-Free Solution

Eliminating the need for intrusive cables, the BCM-W system simplifies installation and avoids shaft withdrawal—a significant challenge with wired systems. The wireless approach allows for easy retrofitting, cutting down on costly diver inspections and ensuring consistent, on-demand information.

Real-Time Data for Enhanced Vessel Maintenance

Ship operators gain access to reliable, real-time bearing wear data that helps detect potential issues like shaft misalignment early on. By minimizing downtime and maintenance costs, the BCM-W system supports vessel longevity and operational efficiency.

Holistic Monitoring Capabilities

Beyond bearing clearance, the BCM-W can integrate with various sensors to monitor additional parameters, such as temperature, salinity, and strain. This versatility offers a comprehensive view of the ship’s hull condition, supporting proactive maintenance.

Addressing Industry-Wide Monitoring Challenges

Jonathan Reeves, CEO of CSignum, highlights how current monitoring practices are typically manual, lacking the real-time insight needed for timely intervention. With CSignum’s EMFS technology, BCM-W enables dynamic monitoring, which is pivotal for identifying issues and optimizing operations. Thordon Bearings will showcase the BCM-W at EuroNaval in Paris, inviting maritime professionals to explore its features at booth L96 from November 4-7, underscoring its commitment to advancing marine technology.
