Jotun, a prominent supplier of advanced hull coatings and solutions for the maritime sector, has established a commercial agreement with Thoresen Shipping Singapore Pte. Ltd., a shipowner with operations in Singapore and Thailand. This agreement will see Thoresen Shipping adopt Jotun Hull Skating Solutions (HSS) across its fleet. Jotun reports that HSS is a groundbreaking proactive cleaning technology designed to enhance hull performance and improve overall vessel efficiency.

Clean Hull Maintenance

Thoresen Shipping has partnered with Jotun to implement Jotun’s Hull Skating Solution (HSS) on their bulk carrier, Thor Brave. HSS is designed to maintain a clean hull throughout the vessel’s operational period, aiming to improve efficiency by conserving fuel, reducing carbon emissions, and protecting marine biodiversity.

A central element of Jotun’s HSS is the HullSkater, a robotic technology developed in collaboration with Kongsberg specifically for proactive hull cleaning. This robot works in conjunction with Jotun’s premium SeaQuantum Skate antifouling coating, creating a synergistic system that prevents the initial stages of fouling. By preventing biofouling, HSS enables the Thor Brave to contribute positively to sustainability efforts.

Andy Hillier, Managing Director of Thoresen Shipping, commented on the partnership: “We at Thoresen Shipping are excited by our partnership with Jotun to help redefine the next generation of hull and vessel performance. We are pleased to have signed this agreement and taken a step towards decarbonization with Jotun’s HSS to support our vision of delivering a high quality service with a passion for being the best in class for cost control and in caring for our environment. We also hope this encourages further industry partnerships and efforts to reduce global carbon emissions.”

As the maritime industry works towards its goal of net-zero emissions by or around 2050, enhancing vessel efficiency has become crucial. Maintaining a clean hull is widely recognized as a readily achievable method of decarbonization. Proactive biofouling management through solutions like HSS is not only an operational advantage but also a sustainability necessity, providing an effective and immediate way to positively impact the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) and other operational efficiency metrics.
