Thoresen Shipping Group has continued to expand its fleet with the purchase of a 2009-built Supramax bulk carrier.

The company, part of Thai conglomerate Thoresen Thai Agencies, has been revealed as the buyer of the Songa Marlin, a 2009-built 58,693 dwt vessel, from Arne Blystad’s Songa Bulk for USD13.8 million.

Songa Bulk, which has been acquiring bulk carriers in anticipation of an appreciation in asset values, had originally bought the ship, then called Tenki Maru, for USD12 million from Tsuneishi Group in November 2016.

Since early 2016, Thoresen Shipping Group, part of Thoresen Thai Agencies, has been refreshing its fleet with the purchase of vessels built in the late 2000s onwards. The company is known to favour second-hand Japanese-built ships.

In May, Thoresen Shipping Group bought the 2006-built 54,170 dwt vessel Karaweik from Santoku Senpaku. This ship was renamed Thor Future.

During the same week, Songa Bulk purchased the 2011-built 181,300 dwt Capesize vessel Cape Claudine for USD30.5 million from Alma Maritime and the 2012-built 82,100 dwt Kamsarmax bulk carrier Atlantic Moon for USD20.5 million from Mitsubishi Corporation.

The ship sales and purchases bring Songa Bulk’s fleet to 15 vessels, with a total of USD296.38 million invested.
