Tilla Systems, a new start-up founded by company builder Flagship Founders, has developed a smart platform for the automated planning and execution of cargo ship crew changes, reports Private Equity Wire.

One of the company’s first customers has already been secured: Hamburg’s venerable shipping company Peter Döhle Schiffahrts-KG. The platform will be officially launched in the fourth quarter of this year. Every year, five million crew changes occur on cargo ships. Gathering data from many sources and organizing multiple parties who must be kept up to date are all part of the planning process.

The platform

Tilla integrates all of its critical data sources through API interfaces. They eliminate the need for human changes by pulling crew data from current systems such as Hanseaticsoft Cloud Fleet Manager or flight data from Amadeus. The ideal time and location for a crew change are determined by a machine learning system. The platform not only covers every stage of the process, from planning to reporting, but it also gathers all relevant data (such as current travel restrictions or transportation routes) in one place, reacts quickly to last-minute changes, and provides suitable alternatives. The high level of automation saves time and money and allows crew managers to focus more closely on essential aspects of crew management.

“Crew changes are extremely fragmented, dynamic, and costly processes making them the perfect point to introduce digital solutions. With Tilla’s support, we can keep a closer eye on crew changes, process information more quickly and efficiently, and ensure all our collaborations run smoothly,” says Johann Diercks, Ship Management Director at Peter Döhle Schiffahrts-KG. “We can streamline our processes and offer our customers the best possible service.”

Future work plan

“We’re thrilled that with Tilla’s help, we can solve the specific problem of costly crew changes. In the future, we also want to improve the much-overlooked issue of crewing overall,” says Fabian Feldhaus, CEO, and Co-Founder of Flagship Founders. The long-term vision is for Tilla to cover all key aspects of crew management, including recruitment and remuneration. However, at present, the focus remains on completing the product development phase for this year’s launch, establishing strong customer relations, and expanding their team of employees.
