Titan Completes First-Ever Ship-to-Ship LNG Bunkering in Cuxhaven

Titan, a supplier of low and zero-emission fuels, has achieved a significant milestone by completing the first-ever LNG (liquefied natural gas) bunkering operation by ship in the port of Cuxhaven, Germany.

Historic LNG Bunkering Operation

For this groundbreaking operation, Titan utilized the 6,000 cubic meter LNG bunker vessel, Optimus, to supply LNG to the trailing suction hopper dredger Vox Ariane, operated by Dutch maritime contracting company Van Oord.

Pioneering LNG Infrastructure Development

According to Titan, this ship-to-ship bunkering in Cuxhaven marks a pioneering step in the development of the region’s LNG infrastructure. Previously, LNG operations in the port were conducted via truck, and the port currently allows LNG bunkering at only one berth.

Support for Shipping’s Clean Fuels Transition

“LNG infrastructure development is part of a broader trend, with more ports across Germany adopting LNG operations to support shipping’s clean fuels transition. Improved LNG bunkering capabilities in Cuxhaven, a Niedersachsen Ports GmbH & Co. KG port, also open up the pathway to maritime decarbonization via liquefied biomethane (LBM) and then renewable e-methane going forward,”Titan stated.

Previous LNG Bunkering Milestones

Titan’s Optimus and Van Oord’s Vox Ariane were also involved in Titan’s first ship-to-ship LNG bunker operations in Hamburg last year. Additionally, in collaboration with Carnival Corporation, one of the world’s largest cruise companies, Titan carried out the first-ever LNG bunkering operation in the port of Kiel in 2023.

Conclusion

Titan’s successful LNG bunkering operation in Cuxhaven represents a significant advancement in LNG infrastructure and supports the broader trend towards clean fuels in shipping, paving the way for further maritime decarbonization efforts.
