Oriental Land Company, the operator of Tokyo Disneyland, announced it’s partnering with a new Disney cruise ship to be run from Japan. The Japanese shipping company NYK Line, together with its subsidiary NYK Cruises and Oriental Land Company, signed a basic business partnership agreement for cruise services based in Japan. This will see the launch of the services in 2028, reports Blooloop.

Cooperation on Operations in Cruise Business

The three companies, as part of the agreement, will consult each other on their cruise business. They will manage and operate their cruise ships as well.

Vision for Family Entertainment Cruises

According to a press release, Oriental Land Company and NYK Group will work together to provide “family entertainment cruise experiences by combining the OLC Group’s expertise in offering immersive settings and excellent hospitality, which has been developed through its well-established theme park and hotel operations, and the NYK Group’s proven cruise operations and outstanding safety technology fostered through its long-standing cargo transportation and Asuka cruise business.”

NYK Group Cruise Experience

NYK Line, Japan’s biggest shipping company, operates 824 ships. Among these, currently, the biggest passenger ship owned by a Japan-registered owner is Asuka II, to be followed by the Asuka III cruise ship later this summer.

Information on Disney Cruise Ship in Japan

OLC already signed a licensing deal with Disney for its cruise business. The 330 billion yen ($2 billion) ship is built with about 1,250 rooms and can host 4,000 passengers. The ship will take off and arrive in ports near Tokyo.

As per OLC last year: “This decision was based on the potential growth of the cruise market in Japan, the experience the company has gained in its theme park and hotel operations, and its strong relationship with the Disney company, which will serve as a great advantage for this business opportunity.”

Disney Cruise Line’s Global Expansion

Disney Cruise Line is in the process of a significant expansion. It currently has six ships, but the company intends to operate 13 by 2031.
