  • A voyage monitoring tool to boost maritime safety and lower emissions is designed by Sperry Marine and ABB Marine & Ports.
  • Sperry Marine Vessel Performance aims to connect bridge navigation systems with remote maintenance.
  • SperrySphere intelligent navigation platform manages ABB’s Vessel Performance modules sought at digitally-enabled navigation services.
  • IMO’s Carbon Intensity Indicator will enhance efficiency, and reduce emissions and is expected to come into force in 2023.

Sperry Marine and ABB Marine & Ports have developed Vessel Performance service to raise navigational safety and lower emissions say Riviera in an article.

Vessel Performance Service

Vessel Performance lets bridge teams and vessel owners analyse onboard data and provides real-time information. It helps vessel operators and owners to comply with upcoming regulations such as IMO’s Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) by a digital decarbonisation tool. This new service relies on a marine advisory system for motion monitoring and forecasting called ABB Ability Octopuc Modules. Vessel data can be analysed and accessed onshore via a web-based fleet portal.

The system continuously visualises the expected vessel motions along planned routes and contributes to cargo safety hence allowing the crew to choose the most efficient route.

CII will come into force in 2023 which will help improve efficiency, reduce emissions and will drive shipowners and operators to monitor vessel performance.

ABB and Sperry Marine

SperrySphere intelligent navigation platform is a digital device that delivers application which operates ABB’s Vessel Performance modules.

According to Thomas Arphippainen, ABB Marine & Ports’ head of sales, services and business development, integrating data from navigation equipment with vessel performance metrics is necessary to create the decarbonisation solution.

Sperry Marine Vessel Performance connects bridge navigation systems with remote maintenance and voyage support services. The managing director of Sperry Marine says, “Our new solution can enable vessels to navigate more safely and lessen emissions and fuel costs.”

They strive to achieve safer and more efficient navigation with remote support and navigation equipment diagnostics, maximising vessel availability and optimising voyage performance.

The digital platform transforms data insights from the vessel using onboard sensors that connect the vessel and records real-time data. This generates business value, provides evidence for cargo insurance claims and demonstrates regulatory compliance.
