A product tanker, which had been stranded since September 10, 2025, near Stewart Island, has been reached by a rescue tug. The vessel experienced steering problems after departing the port of Bluff, New Zealand. The crew is confirmed to be safe and no distress calls were made.
Towing Operation
The tanker’s owners have contracted an ocean-going tug, which normally assists ferries in the Cook Strait, to perform the tow. The operation is a commercial arrangement rather than an official rescue. The start of the tow is currently delayed by severe weather conditions, including gale-force winds in the region. Once the weather improves, the tug will begin towing the tanker to Timaru.
