TransOceanic Wind Transport, a French sailing freight transport company, recently achieved key milestones in the development of its sustainable sailing cargo fleet. This week TOWT launched its first vessel, Anemos, in Le Havre, France. It officially welcomed it as part of the fleet after starting its maiden voyage in August. On 31 October 2024, TOWT conducted a keel laying ceremony for the third of a series at the Piriou Vietnam shipyard located in Ho Chi Minh City, reports Offshore Energy.

Emission Reducing Cargo Ships

Anemos is the first of eight vessels ordered by TOWT in 2022. It all aims to set new standards in low-emission shipping. The ships, including Artemis, the second vessel delivered in August, and Atlantis, share identical specifications, including an 81-meter length and a 1,100-ton capacity.

These ships are built to operate 320 days a year with a hybrid power system. It primarily utilises wind power supported by sail rigging across two masts, alongside one or two engines functioning at varying power levels. In addition, each vessel will have two turbocharged four-stroke marine diesel engines for efficient voyages.

Compliance and Environmental Impact

TOWT’s fleet design aims to meet international regulatory standards for cargo vessels exceeding 500 UMS gross tonnage. Through this innovative hybrid setup, the company anticipates achieving a remarkable reduction in CO2 emissions. As TOWT reports, the ships are projected to achieve over a 95% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to traditional fossil-fuel-powered containerships.

Long-Term Sustainability Goals and Fleet Expansions

TOWT estimates that with its fleet of eight vessels, it will help save around 40,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions. This happens while transporting around 200,000 tonnes of goods. TOWT ordered six additional vessels from Piriou in April 2024, scheduled for delivery in 2026 and 2027, as part of a strategic expansion move. This reflects TOWT’s continued commitment to strengthening its sustainable shipping operations, aligning with its mission to reduce carbon emissions significantly in the freight industry.
