Toxic Hydrogen Sulphide Kills Crew Aboard Vessel

On September 1, a crew member was grievously injured after he was injured during a work accident onboard a cargo vessel.

What happened?

A crew member onboard the vessel ‘Key Fighter’ was severely injured during a work related accident. Two crew members were carrying out work in a chemical tank onboard the vessel when they reportedly fell unconscious.

Rescued by colleagues

The unconscious crew members were rescued by their colleagues and lifted out of the chemical tank. A rescue helicopter was dispatched to the vessel to airlift the injured crew members.

Medevaced to hospital

The injured crew members were medevaced by a rescue helicopter to a hospital in Ålesund, where one of them was then declared dead while one continues to be in a critical condition. Both had been exposed to the toxic gas hydrogen sulphide.

Investigation initiated

An investigation has been initiated by the Fjordane County police and the crew members onboard the vessel were interrogated. The vessel is currently berthed in Måløy, Sogn og Fjordane County and later released.
