Tugs Of The Future

Svitzer, a global towage operator, has ordered a new electric tugboat based on Sanmar’s ElectRA 2500-SX design from Robert Allan Ltd. This 25.4-meter tug will have a powerful 1,818 kWh battery pack and 70-ton bollard pull.

The tug will be built at Sanmar’s environmentally friendly shipyards in Turkey and is scheduled for delivery in the second half of 2025. This investment aligns with Svitzer’s ambitious decarbonization goals, aiming to benefit both customers and communities.

The ElectRA series of tugs, developed through a collaboration between Sanmar, Robert Allan Ltd, and Corvus Energy, offers a range of sizes and power outputs. These innovative vessels utilize alternative fuels and advanced technologies, promoting a sustainable and environmentally friendly towing industry.

Hailed as “Tugs of the Future” by maritime media, ElectRA tugs are currently operating in North America, Latin America, and Europe, demonstrating their operational capabilities and environmental benefits.

Mathias Jonasson, Managing Director, Scandinavia, Svitzer: “In recent years, we have experienced an increasing demand for green towage services in Scandinavia, including the Sound. At the same time, we have committed to doing our part to significantly reduce CO2 emissions in the industry by 2030. Getting a new battery tug solves both challenges as we can continue to provide reliable and safe services to our customers while reducing the carbon footprint.”
