Surgeons can use these glasses to operate tumors, which helps in identifying the Cancerous cells in bright glow colors.

Dr. Samuel Achilefu, a professor of radiology at Washington University, has developed glasses that make tumors stand out in bright colors to operating surgeons. Generally, One in four patients with breast cancer who undergo surgery require a second surgery to remove missed cancer cells.

How does the glass work:

The glasses work by detecting a dye that has attached itself to cancerous cells and which glows under infrared light.

Facts:

  • This technology will reduce the need for multiple surgeries on patients with hard-to-see tumors, which are especially common in people with breast cancer.
  • Cancer-detecting glasses were developed using virtual reality by researchers at Washington University.

  • The cancer-detecting glasses use a two-camera system to highlight cancer cells with infrared light.
