Turkey Implements New Measures To Ease Congestion At Istanbul Strait Anchorage Area

27

The Directorate General of Maritime Affairs of Turkey has introduced new measures to enhance navigation safety, environmental protection, and facilitate fishing activities at the southern entrance of the Istanbul Strait anchorage area. These steps aim to reduce congestion and ensure smoother maritime operations in the Sea of Marmara.

Key Measures Implemented

Reallocation of Waiting Vessels

  • Vessels waiting in drift must relocate to Ambarli Anchorage Areas 2, 3, and 4, and if necessary, to Yalova Anchorage Areas 1 and 2.

Restrictions on Fuel and Water Barges

  • All fuel and water barges must stay in Waiting/Anchorage Area 7, located within Istanbul A and B Regional Anchorage Areas.
  • Barges are strictly prohibited from waiting or anchoring outside designated zones.

Fishing Activities Permitted Between Anchorage Areas

  • Fishing boats can continue operations in non-restricted areas, such as between Istanbul C and G Region Anchorage Areas.
  • Compliance with navigational rules and warnings remains mandatory.

Enforcement Actions for Unauthorized Anchorage

  • Vessels anchored outside designated areas will be warned and directed to move.
  • Non-compliance will result in legal action.

The Republic of Turkey Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, through the Directorate General of Coastal Safety, has issued detailed references and diagrams to guide vessels.

Recommendations for Shipping Operators

Ship managers are advised to follow the new directives and ensure compliance to avoid delays, penalties, or legal repercussions.
