Despite owners delaying ballast water management system and scrubber retrofits, Gemak is enjoying a steady stream of tanker retrofit business, reports Riviera Maritime Media.
Booming Scrubbers Retrofitting
According to Gemak in Turkey, in the first eight months of 2019 the shipyard has undertaken 40 repairs, five scrubber retrofit projects and nine ballast water treatment system retrofit projects on tankers. Overall, this year the shipyard has undertaken 95 projects, which include 17 on chemical tankers, 13 on crude oil tankers, six on product tankers and four on LPG tankers.
In 2018, the shipyard undertook 120 vessel projects, which include 27 on chemical tankers, nine on crude oil tankers, seven on product tankers and six on LPG tankers, among others.
Gemak also took part in the prestigious 3rd Istanbul Bridge mega project, officially named the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge.
How is it handling this?
The shipyard has the capacity to accommodate 15 vessels simultaneously with the three different shipyards of the group. Currently there are three docks, including a graving dock, able to accommodate ships as large as a Capesize dry bulk carrier. Additionally, there is 2 km of quayside.
- The yard has upgraded the capacity of the Handysize floating dock from 9,000 tonnes lifting capacity to 14,000 tonnes lifting capacity.
- The shipyard has also developed a new team for scrubber retrofits and completed roro lengthening projects and powership vessels.
Looking Towards 2020
Looking ahead, the shipyard in Turkey is expecting more BWMS and scrubber retrofit projects for tankers in 2020. It expects an increase in demand in 2020 driven by an increase in healthy freight rates similar to the tanker market in 2015.
