On July 24, a container vessel was battered by huge waves and many containers stacked onboard the vessel fell into the Sea.

What happened?

The 43,000-tonne Liberian-registered ship ‘YM Efficiency’ was enroute from Taiwan to Sydney when it was hit by huge seas off the coast of Port Stephens. Around 81 containers that were stored onboard the vessel tumbled into the ocean and further 62 containers were damaged due to the incident.

Engine shut down

The container vessel is reported to have been hit by a period of quick, heavy rolling for about 60 to 90 seconds. The captain of the vessel discovered that the vessel started twisting 30 degrees to the port and starboard side in the seas as the alarms went off.

The main engine was shut down and loud noises were heard on the deck.

Ship brought under control

After a brief period of going without power. The rolling subsided and the captain was able to gain control of the drifting vessel. A preliminary report highlighted that the container lashed multiple times before the storm and had logged the deteriorating weather.

Clean-up initiated

The authorities have launched a mission to retrieve the missing containers which are adrift at Sea. The service personnel were able to remove tonnes of debris during clean-up efforts as plastic began washing up on pristine beaches as the cargo burst from damaged containers and floated ashore.

An investigation has been initiated into the incident and the ships’ transmitting through the waters have been notified about floating containers.
