The ReCAAP Information Sharing Centre reported two incidents of armed robbery against ships in Asia between January 7th and 13th, 2025. These incidents included one Category 2 and one Category 3 incident. This information highlights the ongoing threat of armed robbery in certain parts of Asia and emphasizes the importance of heightened security measures for vessels operating in these areas, reports Safety4sea.

Area Of Concern

The ReCAAP ISC has reported two incidents of piracy and armed robbery against ships in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore (SOMS) since January 2025.

In response, the ReCAAP ISC advises ships to exercise heightened vigilance when transiting SOMS and urges littoral states to increase patrols and enforcement in these areas.

The report also notes a re-assessment and downgrading of the threat level for the abduction of crew in a recent incident and waters off eastern Sabah. This reassessment reflects the successful efforts of the Philippine government in combating piracy and armed robbery in the region.

Recommendations Given

The ReCAAP ISC has updated its advisory for ships transiting a recent case following the downgrading of the threat level for crew abduction.

Key Recommendations:

  • Enhanced Vigilance: Ship masters and crew are strongly urged to exercise extra vigilance while transiting the area.
  • Immediate Reporting: All incidents should be immediately reported to the Operation Centres of the Philippines and Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM) of Malaysia.
  • Utilize ReCAAP ISC Resources: Ship masters and crew should refer to the ReCAAP ISC Poster on Contact Details for Reporting Incidents and the Regional Guide 2 to Counter Piracy and Armed Robbery Against Ships in Asia for guidance on preventive measures and reporting procedures.
