The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has implemented stringent regulations regarding ship recycling to uphold environmental standards and promote sustainable practices within the maritime industry. These regulations aim to mitigate the environmental impact of vessel disposal and ensure responsible recycling processes.
Facility Standards
Recycling facilities must possess a Dry Dock or equivalent infrastructure and utilize impermeable flooring materials to prevent environmental contamination. Beaching or landing operations are strictly prohibited.
Notification Requirements
Ship owners intending to recycle a vessel must notify the relevant authority within 15 days, providing comprehensive information including the Inventory of Hazardous Materials and other pertinent ship-related details.
Compliance Assurance
If unable to secure a slot at a compliant recycling yard, ship owners have the option to transfer ownership to a UAE entity. This entity must guarantee adherence to the established regulations throughout the recycling process.
Flag State Prohibition
Vessels flagged under the UAE jurisdiction are prohibited from changing flag states with the intention of recycling in non-compliant facilities. This measure reinforces the commitment to enforcing environmentally sound recycling practices.
