As reported by UECC, a new agreement between United European Car Carriers (UECC) and Titan Clean Fuels (Titan) reinforces their commitment to sustainable shipping by expanding the use of biomethane (LBM or bio-LNG). This collaboration ensures that UECC’s multi-fuel ships will predominantly run on LBM for the remainder of 2024 and most of 2025. From July 2024, over 95% of the fuel delivered by Titan to UECC’s pure car and truck carriers (PCTCs) has been biomethane, avoiding more than 30,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.

Scaling Up Emission Reductions with LBM

In 2025, the planned LBM usage will prevent more than 75,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to the annual carbon footprint of approximately 10,000 EU citizens or the emissions from driving 540 million kilometers in an average car. Additionally, using LBM over conventional oil-based fuels virtually eliminates harmful local pollutants such as black soot, particulate matter (PM), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and sulfur oxides (SOx).

Advancing UECC’s Sustainability Goals

The transition to biomethane underpins UECC’s “Sail for Change” sustainability strategy, exceeding carbon intensity reduction targets and ensuring compliance with the FuelEU Maritime regulation. The adoption of LBM enables UECC to explore innovative pooling and banking mechanisms within the maritime industry.

Daniel Gent, UECC’s Energy & Sustainability Manager, praised the involvement of key automotive clients, including Toyota Motor Europe and Ford of Europe, who actively support Green Gas Month initiatives. Gent noted that the collaboration with Titan has facilitated the swift transition from LNG to biomethane, offering customers an opportunity to significantly reduce scope three emissions through sustainable shipping.

Titan’s Role in Driving Renewable Fuels Adoption

Caspar Gooren, Titan’s Commercial Director for Renewable Fuels, emphasized UECC’s leadership in renewable fuel adoption, highlighting the standardization and scalability of biomethane as a viable marine fuel. Gooren advocated for industry-wide adoption, urging stakeholders across Europe and beyond to expand biomethane supply chains and diversify feedstocks.

Investing in a Sustainable Future

UECC’s long-term commitment to sustainability is reflected in its investment in two new multi-fuel car carriers scheduled for delivery in 2028, with an option for two additional vessels. Combined with the biomethane agreement, these initiatives solidify UECC’s leadership in transitioning to low-carbon shipping solutions.
