UECC Wins Bremenports’ Green Focus Award For The Fourth Time

7

United European Car Carriers (UECC) has once again been recognised for its leadership in sustainable shipping. The company secured Bremenports’ Green Focus Award for the fourth time, with its multi-fuel LNG battery hybrid PCTC Auto Advance winning the “Most Eco-Friendly Ship” title for the second consecutive year, achieving an even higher green score. This achievement highlights UECC’s continued commitment to innovation and environmental performance.

Cutting-Edge Technology Driving Green Performance

UECC’s Auto Advance achieved an Environmental Ship Index (ESI) score of 82.77 in 2024, surpassing its 2023 score of 80.1. The vessel, along with sister ships Auto Achieve and Auto Aspire, is equipped with multi-fuel LNG engines and a battery hybrid solution. These ships can operate on both LNG and bioLNG, ensuring significant reductions in CO₂, NOx, and SOx emissions.

The energy management system onboard optimises power production and consumption, ensuring efficient operations at sea and in port. With advanced shaft generators and hybrid energy storage, emissions are minimized, especially during harbour manoeuvring.

Accelerating the Shift to Alternative Fuels

Under its Sail for Change initiative, UECC has rapidly advanced the use of bioLNG to achieve carbon-neutral transportation. The company aims for a 45% cut in carbon intensity by 2030, going beyond IMO’s 40% target. Its strategy includes:

  • Adoption of alternative fuels like biofuels, LNG, and bioLNG (up to 70% emission reductions).

  • Deployment of energy-saving technologies (around 20% reduction).

  • Investment in port electrification and shore power (10% reduction).

  • Advancing digitalisation to optimise fleet performance.

Looking ahead, UECC plans to expand its eco-friendly fleet with two more multi-fuel LNG battery hybrid vessels by 2028, solidifying its position as a leader in sustainable short-sea ro-ro transportation in Europe.

UECC’s fourth Green Focus Award win reaffirms its role as a pioneer in sustainable shipping. Through strategic investments in alternative fuels, hybrid technologies, and digital innovation, the company is setting industry benchmarks while working towards its net zero emissions target by 2040. This recognition not only validates UECC’s progress but also motivates further advancements in green maritime solutions.
