MaritimeTwin Project Launched to Decarbonize UK Shipping

8

Funding from the UK Government’s SEEDS program has been secured by CGI for a new initiative called MaritimeTwin. This project aims to use a combination of satellite technology and digital twins to help cut greenhouse gas emissions in the shipping industry by up to 15%. This effort supports the UK’s Clean Maritime Plan and its broader net-zero goals.

Project Details

The MaritimeTwin project is a collaboration between CGI, Maritime UK, and the Industrial Decarbonisation Research and Innovation Centre (IDRIC) at Heriot-Watt University. The initiative will use CGI’s existing DataTwin360 and EcoHub platforms. The core of the prototype is a digital twin, which is a virtual representation of a real-world system, in this case, a shipping operation.

Technology and Benefits

The technology will integrate real-time satellite data with the digital twin to enable more accurate and efficient route planning, optimize fuel consumption, and monitor emissions. This approach allows shipping operators to simulate different scenarios and make data-driven decisions that balance operational efficiency with environmental impact. The system will also use machine learning to continuously improve its accuracy and recommendations by incorporating real-time environmental data such as weather and ocean currents. This project aims to establish the UK as a leader in clean maritime technology.
