The UK government has rolled out new sanctions against Russia, focusing on 20 tankers linked to a shadow fleet and two ship management companies, reports Lloyd’s List.

Wider Sanctions Target Military and Energy Sectors

This action is part of a larger set of sanctions aimed at hitting Russia’s financial, military, and energy industries. Notably, it includes measures against the military agency that oversees underwater intelligence operations.

The 20 tankers that have been sanctioned boast a total capacity of over 1.4 million deadweight tons (dwt), as reported by Lloyd’s List Intelligence.

UK Government’s Justification

“Putin’s refusal to withdraw his forces from Ukraine is why we continue to work with our partners to bear down on Russia’s ability to fund its war machine,” said the UK government. It added that the latest sanctions “redoubled the UK’s resolve to apply a stranglehold on the Russian economy.”

G7 to Reinforce Oil Price Cap

At the G7 summit in Canada, Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that the UK plans to collaborate with its allies to tighten the oil price cap on Russian crude and petroleum products. The aim is to cut down on Russian oil revenues while also “ensuring stability of the energy market.”
