UK P&I Club And TT Club Explore Landmark Merger To Reshape Maritime Insurance

6

Two of the world’s most established mutual insurers in the global shipping and logistics sectors the UK P&I Club and TT Club have announced early-stage discussions on a potential merger. If finalized, the move could create a uniquely positioned powerhouse spanning the entire maritime and intermodal transport insurance landscape.

A Strategic Union of Two Historic Mutual Insurers

The UK P&I Club, founded in 1869 and insuring over 270 million tonnes of shipping, is one of the 12 members of the International Group of P&I Clubs. TT Club, established in 1968, serves more than 1,400 members in ports, terminals, and logistics operations worldwide.
Together, their combined expertise covers shipowners, container operators, port authorities, terminal operators, and logistics chains forming a comprehensive mutual insurance model for global maritime and transport risks.

Leaders from both organizations highlighted the benefits of scale, diversification, and strengthened financial resilience. UK P&I Club Chairman Jan Valkier stated that the potential merger aligns with long-term sustainable growth and reinforces the club’s commitment to the International Group structure.

Synergies and Shared Vision Drive the Discussions

Both mutuals have long operated under common management by Thomas Miller, giving them deep operational synergies. Their boards agreed in November to explore deeper integration while maintaining their independent brands and service offerings.

TT Club Chairman Morten Engelstoft noted the strong alignment in strategy and member-focused values, supported by TT Club’s high customer retention rate consistently above 95%. By combining capabilities in marine liability, intermodal operations, and port logistics, the merged entity would offer a more integrated and powerful service portfolio to members across the global supply chain.

While the merger discussions remain in the early stages, the initiative signals a potential shift in the maritime insurance sector. A combined UK P&I Club and TT Club would create an influential mutual insurer with unmatched reach across shipping and logistics. Over the coming months, both organizations will continue evaluating the proposal, with the industry watching closely as this historic opportunity unfolds.
