Two seriously injured crew members transferred to hospital after a lifeboat accident, reports CBC News.
What happened?
Two crew members on Greek bulk carrier BLUE BOSPORUS, were seriously injured after a lifeboat accidentally plunged into the water on Tuesday.
The bulk carrier was anchored in Vancouver’s English Bay. Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) says that a drill was underway when the accident happened.
According to the CCG report, the accident happened at about 1:15 p.m. Both crew members were on the lifeboat when it was unexpectedly released from the ship. The lifeboat was sinking when rescuers were called.
Rescue operation
Coast guard officers, the Vancouver Police Department’s marine unit and the Vancouver Port Authority all responded to the mayday call.
According to a spokesperson, a vessel from the Kitsilano Coast Guard station was on scene within 10 minutes. The two injured people were treated by paramedics for “significant injuries” and were later taken to hospital in Vancouver, Canada, in serious condition.
Both the crew members were reported to be stable.
