Urgent Call For Action At COP28

167

In response to the urgent need for climate action, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) set ambitious targets to reduce global shipping emissions, aiming for zero emissions by 2050.

As COP28 unfolds, there’s a critical call to hold the shipping industry accountable for its substantial contribution to the climate crisis, says an article published on mongabay website.

Environmental Impacts Of Shipping

The devastating impact of shipping extends beyond greenhouse gas emissions. The Wakashio oil spill in Mauritius in 2020 serves as a stark example, causing severe damage to coral reefs, mangroves, and marine life, affecting local communities’ livelihoods.

Despite IMO rules, a recent report reveals worsening impacts on seas and oceans, including oil spills, noise pollution, sewage, plastics, and air pollution.

Human Health And Social Consequences

Shipping pollution has far-reaching consequences for human health, causing approximately 250,000 premature deaths annually, particularly affecting developing countries and communities of color.

The industry’s heavy reliance on fossil fuels, especially heavy fuel oil, contributes to toxic emissions and exacerbates health risks for those working on ships and residing in port areas.

Dependency On Fossil Fuels

The shipping industry’s significant role in the global fossil fuel trade raises concerns, with 40% of global cargo being oil, gas, coal, and other fossil fuels. Breaking free from this dependence is crucial to eliminating devastating oil spills, reducing toxic air emissions, and ultimately phasing out fossil fuels.

Zero-Emission Alternatives

Viable zero-emission alternatives exist, such as wind-propulsion, slowing vessels down, and incorporating 5-10% zero-emission fuels. These measures can significantly cut fossil fuel consumption without disproportionately impacting global trade costs. Wind-assisted propulsion technologies like kites, sails, rigs, and wings are readily available for deployment.

IMO Policy Measures

The IMO is currently exploring policy measures to deliver agreed-upon emission cuts. Two key proposals include a greenhouse gas levy and a green fuels mandate, aiming to generate climate finance and set minimum requirements for zero-emission fuels on ships.

Call To Action At COP28

As COP28 addresses the fossil fuel phase-out, there’s a crucial call to include global shipping in any agreement. This inclusion would strengthen the mandate for high ambition in IMO policies, encouraging equitable transitions to zero-emission shipping. It also provides the industry with incentives to invest in alternative solutions urgently needed, aligning with IPCC recommendations.

Final Message

The COP presidency and the UN are urged not to stall progress made at the IMO and to ensure that any fossil fuel phase-out agreement includes all global polluters, even those operating far out at sea. This holistic approach is vital for comprehensive climate action and a sustainable, resilient future.
