  • President Trump highlighted the Alaska LNG Project during his meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on 7 February.
  • President Trump emphasized that Japan will begin importing record amounts of American LNG, with Alaska being the closest major energy source.

In a recent development, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Japan is set to commence importing record volumes of American liquefied natural gas (LNG). This statement was made during a press conference at the White House following discussions with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, reports Reuters.

The move aligns with Japan’s strategy to diversify its energy sources and enhance energy security. JERA, Japan’s largest LNG buyer, has indicated that increased U.S. LNG production will bolster Japan’s energy stability.

Additionally, both nations are exploring a joint venture related to oil and gas projects in Alaska, further strengthening their energy partnership. Prime Minister Ishiba expressed Japan’s interest in importing bioethanol, ammonia, and other resources at stable prices, signaling a broadening of the bilateral energy collaboration.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to address trade imbalances and reinforce economic ties between the United States and Japan. By increasing imports of U.S. LNG, Japan aims to reduce its trade surplus with the U.S., which has been a point of discussion in recent bilateral meetings.

The collaboration also reflects Japan’s commitment to diversifying its energy portfolio and securing stable energy supplies amid global market fluctuations.
