Piracy warning

The US Government has warned about the risk posed by pirates to boats and oil installations in the southern Gulf of Mexico.

Armed criminal group

According to Reuters, the US State Department informed that:

“Armed criminal groups have been known to target and rob commercial vessels, oil platforms, and offshore supply vessels in the Bay of Campeche area in the southern Gulf of Mexico.”

Increase in incidents

Though the risk remained the same, the US Government has now issued the warning as an increased number of incidents were reported in recent months.

According to US MARAD, the first three weeks of April 2020 have seen a high number of piracy attacks on offshore support vessels in the southern rim of the Gulf of Mexico.
