Valenciaport Advances EU-Funded Project To Strengthen Border Security

10

Valenciaport announced progress in its European Union-backed initiative to improve border security at the ports of Valencia and Sagunto. With 75% of the €589,825 project co-financed through the European Security Internal Fund (ESIF), the centerpiece of this project a pilot container equipped with advanced control technology is already in transit and will soon be installed at the Port of Valencia.

Investment and Project Objectives

The project is designed to enhance external border management by improving migration flow controls and enabling the prevention, detection, and investigation of terrorism and other serious crimes. The pilot space will feature advanced systems for passport scanning and user assistance, supported by functional design elements such as thermal insulation, lighting, and large windows for operational efficiency.

Introduction of EES and ETIAS Systems

In addition to the new container, the project includes the implementation of two major EU systems: the Entry and Exit System (EES) and the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS).

  • EES will digitally record entries, exits, and refusals of access for third-country nationals.

  • ETIAS will evaluate potential risks posed by travellers before granting travel authorisation.

To support these systems, verification and supervision tablets will be deployed, allowing border control teams to more efficiently manage and monitor information at crossing points.

The installation of the pilot container marks a key step in Valenciaport’s collaboration with the Ministry of Interior and European institutions to reinforce border control infrastructure. By combining modern technology with EU-wide systems like EES and ETIAS, the initiative not only strengthens port security but also ensures smoother, more reliable migration management in line with European security policies.
