Valenciaport Advances Towards Zero Emissions With New Photovoltaic Installation

9

Valenciaport’s latest photovoltaic installation, located on the vehicle silo of Valencia Terminal Europa (VTE), has begun supplying renewable energy to the Port of València’s electricity grid. This milestone marks a significant step in the Port Authority of València (PAV)’s decarbonization plan, which aims for an emission-neutral port in the coming years.

Key Highlights of the Solar Installation

  • Renewable Energy Contribution:
    • Generates 15% of the port’s daily electricity consumption.
    • Combined with the Muelle Príncipe Felipe solar plant (3% contribution), the port now produces 18% of its electricity sustainably.
  • Energy Output:
    • Installed capacity: 5,738.85 kWp
    • Annual energy generation: 8,380.00 MWh/year
    • Number of solar panels: 10,530 photovoltaic modules (545 Wp each)
    • Total panel area: 35,000 m²
  • Structural Design:
    • The solar panels are mounted on a canopy-style metal structure with nine arcaded openings.
    • The design allows vehicles up to three meters high to pass underneath without reducing usable port space.
  • Investment:
    • Awarded to Lantania and Tecmo for €13.27 million (VAT excluded).

Strategic Importance & Future Plans

During the inauguration, Federico Torres, PAV’s Head of Energy Transition, emphasized the role of solar energy in reducing CO2 emissions and reaffirmed the port’s commitment to achieving zero emissions.

Next Steps:

  • Energy Storage: The port is evaluating solutions for storing excess energy generated during peak hours.
  • Expansion of Renewable Energy Sources: Plans include wind and hydrogen-based energy projects.
  • Infrastructure Development:
    • Extension of railway connections to reduce transport emissions.
    • Construction of two electrical substations to allow docked ships to connect to shore power, eliminating fuel-based emissions.

Commitment to Sustainability

The Port of València is aligning with European and international regulations to decarbonize port activities. The implementation of renewable energy sources is a critical element of this strategy, ensuring the port remains at the forefront of sustainable maritime operations.
