Valenciaport Deploys Its Own 5G Network

64

  • Valenciaport has embarked on a €6 million 5G network project, co-financed by the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility, to enhance efficiency, safety, and connectivity as part of its Smart Port or Port 4.0 vision.
  • The network will support over 25,000 connected devices, including phones, vehicles, surveillance cameras, drones, and environmental sensors, operating independently of mobile operators.
  • Two initial use cases focus on police surveillance and remote maintenance, with broader applications like collision detection, digital twinning, and stowage planning planned for the future.

The private Stand-Alone (SA) 5G network will operate on the n40 frequency band (2.3 – 2.4 GHz) with 20 MHz bandwidth, expandable to 40 MHz. Infrastructure includes 15+ n40 base stations for near-total coverage, a geo-redundant core network, and high-availability cybersecurity. The network is designed to handle a maximum throughput of 10 Gbps with cutting-edge RAN, routing, and switching technology, reports Valenciaport.

Initial Use Cases

High-resolution cameras in police vehicles and equipment for enhanced security, real-time recording, and perimeter monitoring. AI-driven immersive telepresence systems enabling local staff to perform tasks efficiently with real-time expert guidance, reducing the need for physical travel.

Vision for the Future

Valenciaport aims to become a benchmark for Smart Ports in Europe, offering innovative services like intelligent surveillance, passenger 5G coverage, and advanced stowage planning. This dedicated, private network ensures total operational control and scalability, supporting future upgrades and aligning with the port’s strategic goals.

Leadership Perspectives

Enrique Belda, Director of the Port Authority of València, highlighted the project’s role in advancing innovation and digital transformation. Joan Meseguer Llopis, Senior Manager at the Valenciaport Foundation, emphasized the pioneering nature of the project, its scale, and the comprehensive implementation of 5G technology under a self-provisioning model.

By 2027, Valenciaport’s 5G infrastructure aims to establish the port as a future-ready hub, capable of adapting to evolving market and technological trends, enhancing its global competitiveness.
