  • Import and export container volumes increased in June 2025, balancing a 5.46% drop in transhipments and keeping overall container traffic stable.
  • Valenciaport processed 2.83 million containers in the first half of 2025 — a 3.84% increase compared to the same period last year.
  • Growth was also seen in rail freight, Ro-Ro transport, and passenger movements, strengthening the port’s multimodal profile.

The latest figures from Valenciaport for June 2025 highlight a continuing shift in cargo trends. A 5.46% year-on-year decline in transhipment traffic — where containers are offloaded in Valencia before heading to other countries — was offset by a 5.29% rise in exports and a 2.93% increase in imports. This shift underlines the growing role of direct trade flows in the port’s operations.

Evolving Trends in Cargo Movement

After a 17% rise in transhipments during 2024, the first half of 2025 has marked a turning point. The port is now seeing a stronger emphasis on containers directly linked to Spain’s foreign trade. Although transhipment volumes over the past 12 months are still up by 6%, that pace has slowed. Meanwhile, imports have climbed by 14% and exports by 2.12%, signaling a transition in Valenciaport’s core traffic drivers.

Container Volumes in the First Half Reflect Stable Growth

Between January and June 2025, Valenciaport handled 2,833,919 containers, marking a 3.84% increase over the same period in 2024. The month of June saw 487,833 TEUs processed, resulting in a slight year-on-year increase of 0.08%. First-half data also shows a 15.21% increase in imports and a 4.82% rise in exports, while transhipments fell by 1.75%. These numbers confirm the port’s steady overall performance despite a decline in transit cargo.

Key Trade Routes with Asia and Beyond Remain Strong

China continues to top the list of Valenciaport’s trading partners in 2025, with 386,562 TEUs handled to date. The United States follows with 195,534 TEUs, then Algeria (160,993), Turkey (127,292), and India (81,795), reflecting the port’s global trade reach and strategic location.

Rail Transport Supports Sustainable Logistics Goals

Valenciaport’s rail freight services are seeing consistent growth, supporting its goal of efficient, lower-emission logistics. From January to June, the port managed 123,933 containers by rail — up 5.93% compared to the same timeframe in 2024. This translated to 1,637,638 tonnes of goods moved, a 7.78% increase, underscoring the port’s success in connecting maritime and inland transport systems.

Ro-Ro Volumes Expand with Intermodal Growth

Ro-Ro (roll-on/roll-off) traffic — vital for transporting lorries, trailers, and industrial vehicles — rose by 7.78% in the first half of 2025, with 269,637 intermodal transport units moved. This segment is especially important for maintaining regular routes between the Spanish mainland, the Balearic Islands, Italy, and other nearby destinations.

Passenger Movements Show Modest Growth with Cruise Decline

In June 2025, Valenciaport handled 184,515 passengers, representing a 4.88% increase from the previous June. Over the past 12 months, the total number of passengers reached 1,616,882. This includes 836,413 regular ferry passengers, a rise of 3.85%, while cruise passenger traffic decreased by 3.99% to 780,469, reflecting a minor downturn in the cruise sector.
