Valenciaport Sees Significant Traffic Increases in 2024

In the first half of 2024, Valenciaport experienced notable increases in traffic to the Red Sea, the Baltic States, and Australia. Between January and June, the volume of containers exchanged between Valenciaport and the Red Sea ports surged by 65%, with the Baltic countries by 43%, and with Australia by 25%. These figures underscore Valenciaport’s growing global connectivity and its pivotal role in the export sector, establishing Valencia, Sagunto, and Gandia as key gateways to various economic regions worldwide.

Major Trading Partners

Valenciaport’s main trading partners remain China, the United States, Italy, and Turkey, with more than 12 million tonnes of goods exchanged in the first half of the year. China led with 3.73 million tonnes, followed by Italy with 3.58 million tonnes, the United States with 2.72 million tonnes, and Turkey with 2.21 million tonnes. Additionally, the port’s function as a global distribution center for import/export traffic and transhipments has driven significant trade increases with other countries. Notably, trade with Egypt grew by 78%, with Greece by 84%, and with Saudi Arabia by 58%.

Total Goods Handled

From January to June 2024, the Port Authority of Valencia (PAV) managed a total of 40.86 million tonnes of goods, marking a 6.95% increase from the previous year. This total included 3.18 million tonnes of bulk cargo, 8.18 million tonnes of non-containerized general cargo, and 29.49 million tonnes of containerized cargo. Containers remain central to Valenciaport’s operations, comprising 72% of the total goods and 78% excluding bulk.

Container and Passenger Traffic

In the first half of 2024, Valenciaport handled 2,708,318 TEUs (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units), reflecting a 14.05% increase from the same period in the previous year. Passenger traffic also rose, with 668,454 people passing through the Port of Valencia, a 10.14% increase compared to the previous year. Of these passengers, 362,793 were regular line passengers and 305,661 were cruise passengers.

Vehicle Traffic

Despite the overall growth, vehicle traffic saw a slight decline. The Valenciaport terminals handled 316,769 units, representing a 3.27% decrease from the same period in the previous year.
