  • In June 2025, increased imports (+2.93%) and exports (+5.29%) offset a 5.46% drop in transhipment volumes, stabilizing overall container throughput.
  • Valenciaport handled nearly 2.84 million containers in the first half of 2025, reflecting a 3.84% year-on-year increase.
  • Rail, Ro-Ro, and passenger traffic also saw growth, reinforcing the port’s role as a multimodal logistics hub for Spain.

Valenciaport’s June 2025 traffic data underscores a positive trend in Spain’s foreign trade. Despite a continued decline in transhipment traffic — containers that transit through Valencia without entering the local market — rising export and import volumes have helped maintain stability. Exports grew by 5.29% and imports by 2.93% compared to June 2024, compensating for a 5.46% decline in transhipments.

Shift from Transit Cargo to Direct Trade

While transhipment traffic surged by 17% in 2024, that momentum has slowed in 2025. Instead, the port’s performance is increasingly driven by direct import-export activity. Over the past twelve months, transhipment volumes still show a cumulative growth of 6%, though slower than previous periods. In the same timeframe, imports rose by 14% and exports by 2.12%, signaling a shift toward Spain-focused trade.

First-Half 2025 Container Volumes Remain Resilient

During the first six months of 2025, Valenciaport managed 2,833,919 containers — a 3.84% increase compared to the same period in 2024. June’s total container volume reached 487,833 TEUs, marking a slight 0.08% year-on-year growth. Between January and June, imports increased by 15.21% and exports by 4.82%, while transhipment activity fell by 1.75%. This demonstrates the port’s ability to maintain steady throughput despite changing traffic dynamics.

China and U.S. Lead as Valenciaport’s Key Trade Partners

China remains the leading trading partner for Valenciaport in 2025, with 386,562 TEUs moved so far this year. The United States follows with 195,534 TEUs, along with Algeria (160,993), Turkey (127,292), and India (81,795). These figures highlight the port’s strategic importance in connecting Spain to global markets.

Rail Freight Gains Momentum for Sustainable Logistics

Rail transport continues to grow as a vital part of Valenciaport’s green logistics strategy. In the first half of 2025, 123,933 containers were moved by train — a 5.93% increase — totaling 1,637,638 tonnes of cargo, up 7.78% from the same period in 2024. This performance underscores the port’s role in promoting efficient and sustainable inland connectivity.

Growth in Ro-Ro and Intermodal Freight

Ro-Ro traffic, which includes trucks, trailers, and industrial vehicles, also saw strong performance. From January to June, 269,637 intermodal transport units (ITUs) were handled — a 7.78% year-on-year increase. Ro-Ro shipping remains critical for regional links with the Balearic Islands, Italy, and other Mediterranean destinations.

Passenger Numbers Rise, Cruise Segment Dips

Passenger traffic through Valenciaport reached 184,515 in June — a 4.88% increase from June 2024. Over the past year, the port served 1,616,882 passengers. Of these, 836,413 were regular ferry users, up 3.85%, while cruise passengers totaled 780,469, reflecting a slight decline of 3.99% compared to the previous year.
