- Valenciaport handles 526,814 TEUs in May, down 1.38% from last year.
- Trade with Algeria surges, becoming a top partner in both cargo and container volume.
- Strong year-to-date growth offsets monthly transshipment slowdown.
Valenciaport recorded a slight decline in container traffic during May, handling 526,814 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units). This represents a decrease of 7,386 containers compared to May 2024, marking a 1.38% year-over-year drop. While May’s numbers show a minor setback, overall trends remain robust.
Strong Year-to-Date and Annual Growth
Despite the monthly dip, Valenciaport’s performance from January to May has been strong, with a total of 2,345,718 TEUs moved—reflecting a 4.66% increase from the same period last year. Additionally, over the past 12 months, the port achieved a record throughput of 5,580,230 TEUs, up 10.26% compared to the previous year.
Transshipment activity saw a slowdown in May, with volumes falling nearly 5%. Empty transshipment containers were particularly affected, declining 17.31% year-to-date. However, import and export volumes remained resilient, with imports up 4.72% and exports rising significantly by 17.89% during the first five months of the year.
Algeria Emerges as Key Growth Market
One of the most notable shifts in Valenciaport’s trade dynamics is the rise of Algeria as a major partner. Cargo tonnage from Algeria increased by 30.8%, while container volume jumped 60% between January and May. Algeria is now ranked as the fourth-largest trading partner by cargo volume and the third-largest by container volume (134,729 TEUs). China and the United States remain the top two.
In the passenger segment, ferry travel continued its upward trend with 56,654 passengers in May—up 7.74% compared to the same month last year. Cruise activity, however, saw a decline, with 90,979 passengers recorded in May, down 6.67% from the previous year.
Resilient Performance Amid Shifting Trends
Although Valenciaport experienced a small drop in May volumes, the broader performance signals a resilient and expanding role in global trade. Growth in exports and the emergence of new key markets, such as Algeria, are helping to balance out fluctuations in transshipment activity and cruise traffic.
