Value Maritime (VM) has announced a significant collaboration with ForestWave, a leading company in the multipurpose shortsea segment, to retrofit two 10,600 DWT general cargo vessels, FWN Sea and FWN Sun, with VM’s state-of-the-art emission-reducing Filtree Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems (EGCS) and integrated Carbon Capture units.

Home Installation at Rotterdam

This first-time contract between Value Maritime and ForestWave will see the installation of the Filtree system, featuring carbon capture and storage technology capable of capturing up to 10% of CO2 emissions. The installation will take place at the Value Maritime quay in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The plug-and-play Filtree unit, renowned for its unique and patented technology, boasts a compact design that facilitates easy installation on general cargo vessels.

Next-Generation Technology

ForestWave has chosen the next-generation 3MW Filtree with a 10% carbon capture rate and an optional upgrade to a 30% capture rate. The captured CO2 will be stored in dedicated onboard tanks. The installations are scheduled for late 2024, with both companies working closely to ensure a seamless process.

Green Shipping Initiatives

The Filtree system utilizes innovative technology to filter sulfur, CO2, and 99% of ultra-fine particulate matter from the vessels’ exhaust streams. The CO2 capture and storage system further reduces emissions by capturing CO2 from the vessel’s exhaust and storing it in onboard tanks. This captured CO2 can then be discharged onshore for use in sustainable applications such as greenhouse crop cultivation, methanol production, or underground storage.

Positive Impacts and Future Prospects

Caspar van Overklift, Manager ESG at ForestWave, expressed enthusiasm about the new installations, stating, “We look forward to welcoming the EGCS and Carbon Capture units onboard our ships. We are excited about the concept of onboard capturing and storage and the opportunities it brings, and we look forward to gaining experience as the market for captured CO2 matures.”

Maarten Lodewijks, Co-Founder of Value Maritime, added, “We would like to thank ForestWave for their collaboration. It is a privilege for all of us at Value Maritime to work with a Dutch shortsea shipping frontrunner who shares our sustainable vision. Green shipping waits for no one and ForestWave recognises the importance of acting now.”

Conclusion

This collaboration between Value Maritime and ForestWave marks a significant step towards more sustainable shipping practices, leveraging advanced technology to reduce emissions and enhance environmental responsibility in the maritime industry.
