Value Maritime Secures Funding for Carbon Capture on LNG Vessel

According to American Journal of Transportation, The Maritime Efficient & Easy Carbon Capture (ME2CC) project, led by Value Maritime, has received funding from the Maritime Masterplan 2024 to advance a compact, modular carbon capture system. This first-of-its-kind system will be installed on Samskip Kvitbjorn, an LNG-powered vessel operating along Norway’s west coast. The initiative aligns with stringent EU and Norwegian emissions requirements and strengthens Samskip’s sustainable logistics operations.

Innovation in Carbon Capture

The ME2CC system builds on prior small-scale CC projects, such as the installation aboard the vessel Nordica. Its compact design reduces the system’s size by up to one-third while maintaining efficiency. By leveraging hot flue gases for electricity generation, the system not only captures CO2 emissions but also reduces fuel consumption, addressing dual challenges of emissions and operational costs.

Centralised Regeneration and Applications

The captured CO2 will be transported to land-based hubs for regeneration using renewable energy. These hubs enable cost-effective processing and prepare CO2 for valuable applications like agriculture, paving the way for scalable onshore CC infrastructure.

Versatile and Scalable Solution

Designed for adaptability, the system can be installed on a wide range of vessels, including shortsea, inland, and offshore ships. Its modular nature supports leasing models, making carbon capture technology accessible and flexible for maritime operators.
