Van Oord’s Boreas, a state-of-the-art offshore installation vessel, has been officially delivered during a ceremony at the Yantai CIMC Raffles Offshore shipyard. Named after the Greek god of Northern winds, Boreas is purpose-built for the transportation and installation of advanced offshore wind farm foundations and turbines.
The vessel boasts impressive dimensions:
- Length: 175 meters
- Boom height: 155 meters
- Lifting capacity: Over 3,000 tonnes
- Leg length: 126 meters, enabling operations in water depths up to 70 meters
Boreas stands out as the first vessel of its kind capable of operating on methanol, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions by more than 78%.
Next Steps
The Boreas will soon travel to the Netherlands for final outfitting, including equipment for storing and handling wind turbine foundations. The vessel is set to be christened and will become commercially operational in Q3 2025.
